If you have ever been around animals you have probably heard people refer to dogs as “mixed breed” or “pedigree”. There is a big difference between mixed breed dogs and pedigree dogs. If you are not familiar with what exactly makes a dog pedigree, here is a guide to what determines if a dog is considered pedigree or not.

A pedigree dog is a dog whose lineage has been tracked for many years and recorded generally on paper. When you look at your dogs pedigree you will get to see who their parents where, grandparents and so on. It is very much like looking at a person’s ancestry except of course with dogs. A dog’s pedigree can be very formal. You will see names much different than the usual “Fido” on these papers.

A pedigree dog is also considered pureblooded or with two parents who also have pedigrees that are usually of the same breed. An example of this is two poodles being bred together to have pureblooded poodle puppies. Many times people will buy pedigree dogs just to breed them so they can make profits from selling the pedigree puppies. Once the puppies are born you can create a pedigree so you are able to present it with the puppy to prove that it is pedigree. You will need certain information when you go to fill out the pedigree papers. There are some free pedigree generators you can find online that assists you with the process.

Pedigree dogs are recognizable in a lot of ways. They begin to have certain physical and personality traits that you can look to help you determine if they are pedigree. For example a certain lineage of dogs will begin to have the same style of coat or fur, the same color and will be a certain size. There are some cases where in pedigree dogs selective breeding takes place which means that the breeders took two dogs with similar physical and personality traits and bred them to ensure the puppies would be the same. If you are looking for a pedigree puppy and want to know what he or she will be like when they are older chances are you can just look at the parents and you will get a good idea.

If you decide to purchase a pedigree dog it is a good idea to research the breed you are looking at to make sure it will meet your needs. For example, some breeds are not good with children so you will want to stay away from these. If you do your research you will be able to find the perfect pedigree dog for you!
